PS3 Controller

Information on the DualShock PS3 Controller

If you had a PlayStation 3 when it was first released, then you probably remember when they did not have the vibration. This was because when it was released, Sony was not allowed to release their DualShock PS3 controllers because of a lawsuit against Sony by Immersion. This lawsuit occurred because Sony was in a violation of Immersion’s patent by using a technology designed by Immersion in their DualShock controllers.

This lawsuit caused a great problem as many consumers wanted to have rumble features while playing their games. Luckily, this got settled and on April 5, 2008, the DualShock PS3 controller was released in the United States for $54.99. They also discontinued the original controller when the DualShock 3 controller was released. The original controller is no longer being made and is no longer sold.

The DualShock PS3 controller has all the same features as the original controller, except it now includes a rumble feature. For a full list of features, check out the PS3 Controller Features page.

In order for the DualShock version of the controller to work, there is a software requirement. In order to use the controller in PlayStation3 games, then you need the firmware version 1.94 or higher. To use the controller in PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games, then you need the firmware version 2.00 or higher.
